Die '''Olimpiese Somerspele 1896''' ([[Grieks]]: Θερινοί Ολυμπιακοί Αγώνες 1896, ''Therinoí Olympiakoí Agó̱nes 1896''), amptelik bekend as die '''Spele van die Iste Olimpiade''', was die eerste moderne [[Olimpiese Spele]]. Die Spele is op inisiatief van Baron [[Pierre de Coubertin]] gehou en het vanaf [[6 April|6]] tot en met [[15 April]] [[1896]] in [[Athene]], [[Griekeland]], plaasgevind. Athene is te herdenking van die antieke Olimpiese Spele gekies.
 
Die Spele is aan Athene toegewys op 'n kongres wat deur De Coubertin in [[1894]] georganiseer is. Die [[Internasionale Olimpiese Komitee]] is ook tydens hierdie kongres gestig.
 
Die Spele was die eerste sedert die [[Romeinse Ryk|Romeinse keiser]] [[Theodosius I]] die ouantieke Spele in [[393]] verbanverbied het, vanweë die heidense oorsprong daarvan.
 
Daar het 'n totaal van 241 mansatlete uit 14 lande aan hierdie eerste moderne Olimpiese speleSpele deelgeneem. Deelname was nog nie vir vroue oop nie, maar in teenstelling met die antieke Olimpiese Spele is hulle as toeskouers toegelaat.
