12 Canis Majoris

12 Canis Majoris is ’n veranderlike ster 184 ligjare van die Son af in die suidelike sterrebeeld Groot Hond (Canis Major).[9] Dit het die veranderlikesternaam HK Canis Majoris (12 Canis Majoris is sy Flamsteed-naam). Met ’n skynbare magnitude van 6,07[3] is dit net-net met die blote oog sigbaar as ’n dowwe, blouwit ster. Dit beweeg weg van die Son teen ’n radiale snelheid van 16 km/s.[3] Dit is die helderste ster in die nabyheid van die oop sterreswerm NGC 2287,[10] hoewel dit na aanleiding van sy eiebeweging waarskynlik nie lid daarvan is nie.[11]

Die ster het ’n sterreklassifikasie van B7 II/III,[1] wat ooreenstem met dié van ’n B-tipe reus/helder reus.[1] Dit is ’n magnetiese Bp-ster[12] van die soort met min helium (CP4), met ’n spektrum wat getuienis toon van vertikale stratifikasie van helium in sy atmosfeer.[13] Samus et al. (2017) klassifiseer dit as ’n SX Arietis-veranderlike met ’n helderheid wat oor ’n periode van 2,18045 dae wissel van magnitude 6,00 tot 6,05.[4]

Die ster se massa is 1,25 keer dié van die Son[5] en sy radius 2,73 keer die Son s’n.[6] Sy ligsterkte is 498 keer dié van die Son[3] en sy effektiewe temperatuur is 6 500 K.[8]
