Reds was die gunsteling om te wen met 12 benoemings, maar Chariots of Fire het in ’n verrassende wending die Oscar vir beste rolprent ingepalm. Dit was die eerste keer in 13 jaar dat ’n Britse prent dié prys wen.

Henry Fonda het in dié jaar sy eerste Oscar gewen (vir On Golden Pond). Op 76 jaar was hy die oudste wenner in die kategorie vir beste akteur. Sy enigste ander benoeming was 41 jaar tevore vir The Grapes of Wrath. Sy medester Katharine Hepburn het haar vierde Oscar vir beste aktrise gewen en is die aktrise met die meeste pryse in dié kategorie.

Dit was die eerste jaar dat ’n Oscar vir beste grimering toegeken is; die wenner was Rick Baker vir An American Werewolf in London.
