Naam wysig

Die ster se Bayer-naam is "Alpha Leporis" en sy Flamsteed-naam "11 Leporis". Die tradisionele naam, "Arneb", kom van die Arabiese أرنب arnab, "haas"[9] (Lepus is die Latyn vir "haas"). Die Internasionale Astronomiese Unie se sternaamwerkgroep (WGSN)[10] het die naam Arneb in Julie 2016 vir die ster goedgekeur.[11][12]

Eienskappe wysig

Arneb is ’n groot ster met ’n massa van sowat 14 keer dié van die Son[4] en ’n radius van 129 keer die Son s’n.[5] Dit is sowat 2 218 ligjare van hier af.[2] Die ster het ’n sterreklassifikasie van F0 Ib;[1] die ligsterkteklas Ib dui aan dit is ’n superreus met ’n laer ligsterkte. Sy spektrum dien sedert 1943 as een van die stabiele ankerpunte vir die klassifikasie van ander sterre.[13] Die ster se effektiewe temperatuur is sowat 6 850 K,[4] wat dit die geelwit kleur gee wat tipes van F-tipe sterre is. Dit is sowat 13 miljoen jaar oud.[4]

Arneb is ’n ouer, geëvolueerde ster wat reeds deur sy superreusfase is en nou in die laaste stadium van sy sterevolusie is, of dit sit dalk nog uit as deel van sy superreusfase. Volgens sy geraamde massa sal dit na verwagting in ’n supernova ontplof – maar nie voor die volgende miljoen jaar nie. [14]
