Alioth (ook bekend as Epsilon Ursae Majoris of ε UMa) is die helderste ster in die sterrebeeld Groot Beer (Ursa Major), al het dit die Bayer-aanwysing epsilon. Met ’n skynbare magnitude van 1,77 is dit die 32ste helderste ster in die naglug.

Dit is die ster in die stert van die Groot Beer die naaste aan sy lyf, en lid van die Ursa Major-sterregroep wat saam deur die lug beweeg. Die ster is histories dikwels in skeepshandel vir navigasie gebruik.

Eienskappe wysig

Volgens Hipparcos is Aliot 81 ligjare van die Son af. Die "p" in sy sterreklassifikasie van A1 III-IVp kB9 staan vir "peculiar" of "buitengewoon" omdat sy spektrum kenmerkend van ’n α2 Canum Venaticorum-veranderlike is. Alioth is verteenwoordigend van hierdie soort sterre, wat ’n sterk magneetveld het. Alioth het baie vreemde spektraallyne wat oor ’n tydperk van 5,1 dae wissel. Die "kB9" in die klassifikasie dui aan die kalsiumlyn is teenwoordig en dui op ’n B9-spektraaltipe, al dui die res van die spektrum op A1.

Daar word al lank vermoed Alioth is ’n spektroskopiese veelvoudige ster, met twee of meer komponente.[10] ’n Meer onlangse studie dui daarop dat Alioth se wisselings oor 5,1 dae die gevolg kan wees van ’n substellêre voorwerp met ’n massa van omtrent 14,7 keer dié van Jupiter wat gemiddeld 0,055 AE van Alioth af in ’n eksentrieke wentelbaan (e=0,5) is.[11] Dié metgesel se rotasieperiode kan 5,1 dae wees. Geen metgeselle is egter met moderne instrumente opgespoor nie.[5]

Name wysig

Die ster se Bayer-naam is "Epsilon Ursae Majoris". Die tradisionele naam, "Alioth", kom van die Arabiese alyat al-hamal ("die skaap se vet stert"). In 2016 het die Internasionale Astronomiese Unie se sternaamwerkgroep (WGSN) dié naam vir die ster goedgekeur.)[12][13]
