John Cleese

John Marwood Cleese (gebore op 27 Oktober 1939) is ’n Britse akteur, komediant, skrywer en rolprentvervaardiger. Hy het bekendheid verwerf as een van die hoofkarakters in Monty Python’s Flying Circus en later as die hotelbaas Basil Fawlty in die TV-komedie Fawlty Towers. Sy flieks sluit in A Fish Called Wanda (1988). Hy speel die rol van Q in die James Bond-fliek Die Another Day (2002) en die rol van mnr. Edly, The Guv, in die twee Spud-flieks.

Loopbaan

Cleese het op die Edinburgfees bekend geraak as ’n draaiboekskrywer van randproduksies en akteur in The Frost Report. In die laat 1960's was hy die medestigter van Monty Python, die komediegeselskap wat verantwoordelik was vir die sketsprogram Monty Python's Flying Circus en die vier Monty Python-rolprente: And Now for Something Completely Different, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Life of Brian en The Meaning of Life.

In die middel 1970's het Cleese en sy eerste vrou, Connie Booth, die Britse TV-sitkom Fawlty Towers geskryf en daarin gespeel. Die reeks het drie Baftas gewen. Later het hy saam met Kevin Kline, Jamie Lee Curtis en Michael Palin in A Fish Called Wanda en Fierce Creatures gespeel, wat hy albei ook geskryf het. Hy was ook in baie ander prente te sien, soos Clockwise, twee James Bond-flieks as Q (die kwartiermeester), twee Harry Potter-prente en die laaste drie Shrek-flieks.

Saam met die skrywer van Yes Minister, Antony Jay, was hy die stigter van Video Arts, ’n vervaardigingsmaatskappy wat vermaakopleidingsprente maak. In 1976 was hy ook medestigter van The Secret Policeman's Ball-welsynprogramme om geld in te samel vir die menseregte-organisasie Amnestie Internasionaal.
