Beskrywing

Deutsch: Ausschnitt aus dem Kopernikus-Epitaph der Johanniskirche in Thorn, aus dem Jahre 1589. Das Epitaph ist eines der ältesten Kopernikus-Bildnisse, um 1582 gestiftet vom Thorner Stadtphysikus Dr. Melchior Pyrnesius (gest. 1589). Der Spruch betont die Religiosität und Demut von Kopernikus. Er stammt von dem ehemaligen ermländischen Bischof und späteren Papst Pius II., Enea Silvio Piccolomini, und lautet auf deutsch:

Weder bitte ich um die gleiche Gnade, die dem Paulus gewährt wurde, noch suche ich die Vergebung, die Petrus fand, sondern ich bitte inbrünstig um diejenige, die Du am Kreuz dem Schächer gegeben hat.
