Sterre op die lys hier onder wat met die blote oog van die Aarde af gesien kan word, se skynbare magnitude het ’n ligblou agtergrond. Die [[Sterreklassifikasie|sterklas]] van die sterre en bruin dwerge word volgens die kleur van hul [[spektraaltipe]] aangegee (die kleure is afgelei van konvensionele name vir die spektraaltipes en is nie die stersterre se presiese sigbare kleur nie). Baie bruin sterre is nie volgens hul visuelesigbarelig-spektrum spektruk(m<sub>V</sub>) geklassifiseer nie, maar volgens hul infrarooi-magnitude (m<sub>J</sub>).
