Voordat die brug gebou is was die verkeer genoodsaak om in die [[Tarnrivier]]vallei af te daal en met die ''route nationale N9'' naby die dorp Millau langs te ry met gevolglike ernstige verkeersopeenhopings aan die begin van die Julie en Augustus vakansieseisoen. Die brug oorspan nou die Tarnvallei op sy diepste punt en verbind die ''causse du Larzac'' met die ''causse rouge'' en is binne die grens van die [[Grands Causses]] natuurreservaat.

Construction began on [[October 10]], [[2001]] and was intended to take 3 years, but weather conditions put work on the bridge behind schedule. A revised schedule aimed for the bridge to be opened in January 2005. The viaduct was officially inaugurated by [[Jacques Chirac|President Chirac]] on [[December 14]], [[2004]] to open for traffic on [[December 16]], several weeks ahead of the revised schedule.
