== Suid-Afrika ==
Tussen 1820 en 1837 woon en werk hy as 'n militêre dokter in [[Suid-Afrika]]. In die tydperk beskryf hy 'n groot aantal diere wat nuut vir wetenskap was. Vir die rede word hy die vader van die Suid-Afrikaanse dierkunde genoem. Die ''IOC World Bird List'' lys, onder andere 87 voëlspesies wat hy beskryf het, waaronder die [[boskorhaan]] (''Lophotis ruficrista''), [[kaalwangvalk]] (''Polyboroides typus''), [[kwêvoël]] (''Corythaixoides concolor'') en [[rooiwangnaguil]] (''Caprimulgus rufigena'').<ref>{{en}} {{aut|F.
