In die tweede millennium v.C. was Micene een van die belangrikste sentrums van die Griekse beskawing, ’n militêre vesting wat ’n groot deel van Suid-Griekeland oorheers het. Die deel van die Griekse geskiedenis tussen omstreeks [[1600 v.C.|1600]] en [[1100 v.C.]] word die [[Miceense Griekeland|Miceense tydperk]] genoem met verwysings na Micene.
