Die bevrugte [[Eier (biologie)|eier]] produseer ’n larwe wat homself by die meeste spesies aan die seebodem heg. Die larwe ontwikkel in ’n hidropoliep, wat ’n skifistoma genoem word. Dit plant aseksueel voort deur soortgelyke poliepe te vorm deur middel van knopvorming. Daarna verander dit óf in ’n medusa óf dit produseer verskeie medusas deur segmentering. Die medusas is aanvaklik mikroskopies en dit kan jare duur voordat hulle seksueel heeltemal volwasse is.<ref name=IZ/>
