Slag van Verdun: Verskil tussen weergawes

In 1914 het Verdun die Duitse inval weerstaan en die stad se versterkings kon selfs opgewasse bly teen die reuse artillerie wat die Duitsers ontplooi het. Die Franse garnisoen is in die stadsdeel wat deur Vauban in die 17^de eeu gebou is, gehuisves. Teen die einde van die 19^de eeu is 'n ondergrondse kompleks gebou wat gedien het as werkswinkels, ammunisie-opgaarplekke, hospitale en kwartiere vir die Franse soldate.

 

Na die Duitsers nie in 1914 daarin kon slaag om 'n vinnige oorwinning te behaal nie, het die oorlog vinnig in 'n skaakmat op die Westelike Front ontwikkel. Loopgraafoorlogvoering het ontstaan en nie een van die kante kon 'n deurbraak bewerkstellig nie.

A further minor French offensive took place at Verdun in August 1917, recapturing the Mort Homme.

 

It was crucial that the less populous Central Powers inflicted many more casualties on their adversaries than they themselves suffered. At Verdun, Germany did inflict more casualties on the French than they incurred&mdash;but not in the 2:1 ratio that they had hoped for, despite the fact that the [[German Army#World War I 1914–1918|German Army]] grossly outnumbered the French.

 

The successes of the fixed fortification system led to the adoption of the [[Maginot Line]] as the preferred method of defense along the Franco-German border during the inter-war years.
