Nasser word as een van die belangrikste politieke figure in die moderne Arabiese geskiedenis en politiek beskou. Onder sy leierskap het Egipte die [[Suezkanaal]] en verskeie ander industrieë genasionaliseer, en 'n belangrike rol gespeel om [[imperialisme]] in die [[Arabiese wêreld]] en in [[Afrika]] stop te sit. Hy het ook 'n belangrike rol in die stigting van die [[Beweging van Onverbonde Lande]] gespeel. Sy pan-Arabiese nasionalisme, wat dikwels "Nasserisme" genoem is, was in die 1950's en 1960's in die Arabiese wêreld gewild gewees. Die [[Israel]]iese oorwinning oor die Arabiese weermagte in die [[Sesdaagse Oorlog]] het sy beeld beskadig, desnieteenstaande het baie Arabiere hom steeds as 'n simbool van Arabiese waardigheid en vryheid beskou.
