Die vaalboskat is vaalbruin tot geel of grys met swart strepe op die stert. Sommige het ligte strepe om die lyf. Hul het korter hare as die [[Europese wilde kat | Europese subspesie]] en is heelwat kleiner. Die lengte van die kop en lyf is 45 tot 75 cm (17.7 tot 29.5 duim), die stert: 20 tot 38 cm (7.87 tot 15duim) en hul gewig 3 tot 6,5 kilogram (6,61 tot 14,3 pond).
