The plaque at the front reads, "Ancient Monuments Act Northern Ireland, 1926. There Eighteenth Century wrought iron gates stood originally at the entrance to Richill Castle, County Armagh then the property of the Richardson family the property having come into the possession of the Government of Northern Ireland the gates were declared to be an ancient monument and for their better preservation and display were removed from their original site and erected in their present position by the Ministry of Finance for Northern Ireland during the rebuilding of Hillsborough House after its destruction by fire - November, 1936"
