Prānāyāma (Sanskrit: प्राणायाम) is die jogiese praktyk om op asemhaling te fokus. In Sanskrit, beteken prāṇa "noodsaaklike lewenskrag", en yāma beteken om beheer te verkry. In joga word asem geassosieer met prāṇa, dus, pranayama is 'n manier om die prāṇa ṣakti, "lewensenergieë", te verhef. Prānāyāma word beskryf in Hindoe-skrifte soos die Bhagavad Gita en die Joga Sutras van Patanjali. Later in Hatha joga tekste het dit die volledige opskorting van asemhaling beteken.

Prāṇāyāma (Devanagari: प्राणायाम prāṇāyāma) is 'n Sanskrit-verbinding. Dit word verskillend deur verskillende skrywers gedefinieer.

Macdonell gee die etimologie as prana (prāṇa), asem, + āyāma en definieer dit as die opskorting van asem.[1]
