Onlangs het Peter Jenniskens<ref name="Jenniskens P. 2006"/> gereken die meeste van ons kortperiode-meteoorreëns ontstaan nie vanweë die gewone waterverdamping van aktiewe komete nie, maar is die gevolg van onreëlmatige verbrokkelings, wanneer groot stukke afbreek van ’n hoofsaaklik dormante komeet. Voorbeelde is die [[Quadrantides]] en [[Geminides]], wat ontstaan het weens die verbrokkeling van die [[asteroïde]]-agtige voorwerpe 2003&nbsp;EH1 en 3200&nbsp;Phaethon, onderskeidelik sowat 500 en 1&nbsp;000 jaar gelede. Die fragmente breek verder op in stof, sand en klippies en sprei uit oor die wentelbaan van die komeet om ’n digte meteoroïdestroom te vorm.
 
==Bekende meteoorreëns==
Baie meteoorreëns kom jaarliks op dieselfde tyd voor omdat die Aarde elke jaar op dieselfde tyd deur ’n spesifieke stroom afval beweeg.

Die duidelikste meteoorreën in die meeste jare is die [[Perseïdes]], wat hul hoogtepunt elke jaar op 12 Augustus bereik, met meer as een meteoor per minuut. Nasa het ’n [http://leonid.arc.nasa.gov/estimator.html nuttige program] om te bereken hoeveel meteore per uur vanaf ’n sekere ligging sigbaar is.
 
Die [[Leonides]] bereik hul hoogtepunt omstreeks 17 November van elke jaar. Sowat elke 33 jaar veroorsaak dié reën ’n meteoorstorm, met duisende meteore per uur op sy hoogtepunt. Die laaste Leonide-storms was in 1999, 2001 (twee) en 2002 (twee). Wanneer die Leonides nie ’n storm veroorsaak nie, is hulle minder aktief as die Perseïdes.
