António de Saldanha

Portugese seevaarder

António de Saldanha was 'n Portugese seevaarder in bevel van die vlooteskader wat in 1503 van Lissabon na die Ooste gestuur is. Hy is die eerste Europeër wat in Tafelbaai anker gegooi het en het Tafelberg sy naam gegee. Hy was waarskynlik die eerste blanke wat Tafelberg uitgeklim het deur die Platteklip-roete te volg.[1] Tafelbaai is meer as 'n eeu lank die Watersuipplek van Saldanha genoem en later is die naam oorgedra na die huidige Saldanhabaai.
