Epsilon Centauri

Epsilon Centauri (ε Centauri, afgekort as Epsilon Cen of ε Cen) is ’n ster in die suidelike sterrebeeld Sentour (Centaurus). Dit is een van die helderste sterre in die sterrebeeld, met ’n effens veranderlike skynbare magnitude van 2,3. Volgens metings van die Hipparcos-satelliet is dit sowat 430 ligjare van die Son af.

ε Centauri het ’n groot massa van omtrent 12 keer dié van die Son[1] en ’n sterreklassifikasie van B1 III,[1] wat aandui dit is ’n reusester wat ver gevorder is in sy evolusie. Sy ligsterkte is meer as 15 000 keer dié van die Son[1] en sy effektiewe temperatuur is sowat 24 000 K.[1] Dit gee die ster die blouwit skynsel van ’n B-tipe ster.[7] Dit word geklassifiseer as ’n Beta Cephei-tipe veranderlike ster, met ’n primêre periode van 0,16961 dae (4 uur en 4 minute); dit voltooi 5,9 siklusse per dag.[8] Tydens elke siklus wissel die helderheid van die ster tussen 2,29 en 2,31 m.

ε Centauri is ’n relatief jong ster van sowat 16 miljoen jaar.[6]
