Hy het voorheen vanuit Rusland gewerk en het 'n betrekking gehad aan die Moskouse Skool vir Ekonomie.[8] Hy is tans professor aan die Universiteit van Suid-Oos Noorweë.[8][9] Sy spesialisgebied is Russiese buitelandse beleid, konserwatisme en integrasie in Eurasië, waaroor hy verskeie boeke die lig laat sien het.[10] Hy is geaffilieer by die Valdai Discussion Club,[11] 'n Russiese dinkskrum wat geassosieer word met President Wladimir Poetin.[12]

Diesen is bekend as gereelde kommentator op Russia Today (RT). Hy lewer ook bydrae vir Pål Steigan, 'n webwerf met sterk teen-globalisme standpunte.[13] Hy beweer ook dat die Weste 'n informasieoorlog teen Rusland voer.[14]

Diesen het in 2020 'n rubriek in Aftenposten geskryf saam met Arne Treholt. Treholt is tydens die Koue Oorlog skuldig bevind daaraan dat hy vir die Sowjetunie gespioeneer het. Volgens die rubriek beskik Rusland "oor regmatige belange en bekommernisse wat sy sekuriteit betref". Die rubriek beweer ook dat Rusland onregverdiglik beskou word as 'n sekuriteitsbedreiging.[15]
