Loopbaan

Nolte het eers in die TV-reeks Rich Man, Poor Man gespeel wat op Irwin Shaw se trefferroman van 1970 geskoei was. Later was hy in nog meer as 40 rolprente te sien, waarin hy uiteenlopende karakters vertolk het. Dit, tesame met sy atletiese bou en rasperstem, was die kenmerke van sy loopbaan.
In 1973 het hy as gaskunstenaar opgetree in die TV-reeks Griff se episode "Who Framed Billy the Kid?", as Billy Randolph, ’n voetbalspeler wat van moord beskuldig word. Hy het die Golden Globe vir beste akteur in ’n drama gewen en is benoem vir die Oscar vir beste akteur vir die 1991-fliek The Prince of Tides. Hy het ook Oscar-benoemings gekry vir Affliction (1998) en Warrior (2011).
Van Nolte se ander prente sluit in The Deep (1977), 48 Hrs. (1982), Down and Out in Beverly Hills (1986), Another 48 Hrs. (1990), Everybody Wins (1990), Cape Fear (1991), Lorenzo's Oil (1992), The Thin Red Line (1998), Hulk (2003), The Good Thief (2003), Hotel Rwanda (2004) en A Walk in the Woods (2015).
Persoonlike lewe
wysigNolte was sy lewe lank gereeld in die moeilikheid. In 1965 is hy in hegtenis geneem vir die verkoop van vervalste dokumente. Hy het ’n vonnis van 45 dae tronkstraf en ’n boete van $75 000 gekry, maar die vonnis is "tydelik" opgeskort.[1]
Op 11 September 2002 is hy weer in hegtenis geneem, dié keer weens beweerde dronkbestuur. Drie dae later het hy in die Silver Hill-hospitaal in Connecticut inbespreek vir berading.[2] Toetse het later gewys hy was onder die invloed van 4-hidroksiebutaansuur, ’n dwelmmiddel wat met afspraakverkragting (date rape) verbind word. Nolte se reaksie was dat hy die middel "al vier jaar lank gebruik en nog nooit verkrag is nie".[3] In 2002 is hy weer aangekla van dronkbestuur. Hy het ’n opgeskorte vonnis van drie jaar gekry, met die opdrag om alkohol- en dwelmberading te kry en dat hy lukraak getoets moet word.
