The Beeld shows two results for Eritrea but none for Eritrië?? How do we know what names more common? Ben Bezuidenhout (kontak) 21:35, 6 Januarie 2010 (UTC)
- This article on the Beeld lists the name as Eritrea. Ben Bezuidenhout (kontak) 21:37, 6 Januarie 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry, my mistake. I looked for "Eritria" instead of "Eritrea" and could not find any, then I found 10 articles with "Eritrië". Now I see there are a few hundred with Eritrea. I'll correct it. When I worked at a newspaper a hundred years ago we used to spell it Eritrië. Winston (kontak) 22:18, 6 Januarie 2010 (UTC)
- And have you used the spelling of other countries while you worked for the newspaper? Cuz if you did that is considerable evidence for articles since Afrikaans google search is rubbish :/ Ben Bezuidenhout (kontak) 07:04, 7 Januarie 2010 (UTC)
- My first source is the Afrikaanse Woordelys en Spelreëls. If it gives two forms which are both correct (like Afganistan/Afghanistan) or I can't find it in there, I use the form preferred by the newspapers. Many place names in Afrikaans have changed in the last decade or so (like Kasakstan which are spelled Kazakstan or Kazachstan now, or Kosovo which became Kosowo), and many of them exist together with the old spellings (like Oesbekistan/Oezbekistan), so it is difficult to choose just one spelling as the correct one. Some names on the list like Abkasië and Maldive were just plain wrong. Abchasië and Maledive are the only forms I'm aware of, used by the newspapers and given by the AWS. - I have to admit however that I feel uncomfortable using ch and z because of it's Dutch origins. Especially the ch because the zs used are heavily influenced through English. Ben Bezuidenhout (kontak) 11:09, 7 Januarie 2010 (UTC)
