Vanaf die 1960's het klein vliegdekskepe vir amfibiese oorlogvoering verskyn. Dit sluit nie hoekdekke, lanseerders en vangkabels in nie. Dit is beperk tot die gebruik van (vervoer) [[helikopter]]s. Hulle bied egter akkommodasie vir 'n bataljon mariniers. Die gebruik van vertikale opstyg- en landingvliegtuie (van die Harrier-tipe) gee hierdie skepe egter ekstra opsies. In die vroeë 1960's het Groot-Brittanje vir die eerste keer twee skepe van die Centaur-klas ingerig en dit 'kommandodraers' genoem. Omstreeks 1970 is hulle weer uit diens geneem. Die Amerikaanse vloot het eers die Iwo Jima-klas in die 1960's vir hierdie doel gebou en eers die Tawara en later die Wasp-klas uit die 1970's. Die VSA het vandag 'n dosyn van hierdie soorte skepe. Die Verenigde Koninkryk het die HMS ''Ocean'' sedert 1998. Frankryk het twee skepe en Spanje het bouplanne.
