Tussen die 1680's en 1850's het die Whigs die mag betwis met hul mededingers, die [[Tories]]. Die Whigs het in die 1850's met die nuwe [[Liberale Party (Verenigde Koninkryk)|Liberale Party]] saamgesmelt, hoewel sommige aristokrate van die Whigs die Liberale Party in 1885 verlaat het om die [[Liberale Unioniste Party]] te vorm, wat in 1912 saamgesmelt het tot mededinger van die Liberale, die hedendaagse Konserwatiewe Party.
