'''Jupiter''' is vanaf die [[son]] gesien die vyfde en tewens grootste [[planeet]] van ons [[sonnestelsel]]. Nes [[Saturnus (planeet)|Saturnus]] is Jupiter 'n [[gasreus]] en het dus nie 'n vaste oppervlakte nie. Die planeet is vernoem na die [[Romeinse mitologie|Romeinse]] [[god]] [[Jupiter (godmitologie)|Jupiter]].
 
==Samestelling==
Die kern van Jupiter het 'n deursnee van 14 000 km en bestaan deels uit nikkel-yster ('n mengsel van sowat 90 % yster en ca. 8% nikkel) en deels uit klip, en het 'n temperatuur van 25 000 K. Daar om is 'n ongeveer 40 000 km dik laag van [[metaal-waterstof]] (90%) en [[helium]] (10%). Hierdie laag word deur 'n relatief dun oorgangslaag geskei van die buitenste laag van vloeibare molekulêre waterstof wat 'n dikte van 20 000 km het waar die temperatuur en druk na binne toe toeneem. Behalwe waterstof en helium kom in laer konsentrasies ook [[metaan]], [[etaan]] en [[koolstofdioksied]] voor.

Normaalweg absorbeer planete lig van die [[son]] en straal weer eweveel energie uit na die ruimte in die vorm van hitte. [[Infrarooi]]metings dui egter an dat Jupiter twee maal soveel energie uitstraal as wat dit absorbeer. Hierdie ''ekstra'' energie is vermoedelik 'n overblyfsel uit die tyd toe Jupiter gevorm is<! en lig opgeslagen in de kern-->. 'n Ander moontlike verklaring vir die verskeinsel is dat die stadige digter wording van Jupiter onder involed van sy eie [[swaartekrag]] met uitstraling van hitte gepaard gaan.
