You have this image, which someone seems to have copied from English Wikipedia. However, people in English Wikipedia have found out that the image doesn't belong to the public domain. Instead, you can only use it for non-commercial or educational purposes. Such is too restrictive licence for Wikipedia. [1] You can't even use the image in Wikipedia under United Sates copyright law. In English Wikipedia they are going to delete the image. I think that you should do the same because the Wikipedia servers are located in United States. -85.76.146.129

Hi, I am w:nl:gebruiker:Walter of the dutch Wikipedia. I am writing you because your are listed as ambassador of your wiki. I have something to say that I think you will find useful and possibly others of your wiki also.

You know it is not easy for the members of a local wiki to be informed about what is going on in the higher levels of the Wikimedia family. This because of the language problem and the high level of fragmentation of places where you can find information.

I am now making a weekly news letter (Wikizine) that attempts to provide the news of the Wikimedia projects. The concept is to list only a very short description of the news an give the relevant url to the subject. I want it to be short, only give the news that is important for all projects. The target audience include the ambassadors. It is for people who are interested in what it going on outside there own wiki. I emphasize on the news that is practical-technical. The information comes form several "news"-pages on several wikis, the mailinglists and IRC. There will be news I can not discover. I can only create one version in something that supposed to be English. I count on the readers to inform there local wiki about the news in there own language.

Wikizine is send by use of the mailinglist Announce-l. It is only used for this. So people can subscribe without being swamped by emails like the lists.

Is the word 'Potje' in Afrikaans? What is the translation?

In Afrikaans it is known as ysterpot, swart pot or just potjie. In English it is known as a dutch-oven.

"Pot" in Afrikaans and Dutch has the same meaning as the same word in English. It can be used for "cooking pot". "-je" is a suffix added to a word to form a dimmunitive. Well, in Dutch only, because in Afrikaans the suffix is "-jie", so the word is "Potjie".

Foundation New Images Policy

I am Yosri from Malay Wikipedia. Recently I was informed by certain parties that MS Wiki need to delete any images tagged as Non-Commercial under [ http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Resolution:Licensing_policy Foundation Licensing policy]. After I have done some studies, I realised that Wikipedia Foundations is moving towards allowing commercialises all images, as such they are acting on behalf of commercial company to require all images loaded with tagging Non-Commercial in all Wiki Project to be removed, including those loaded in local Wiki. You are only allowed to licenses your images under "free content", which specifically allows commercial reuse, example GDLF 1.2. Certain images is excempted under a very narrow EDP ("exemption doctrine policy") definition. If you all already aware about this, please ignore this comment. Population Matters

Hi,

I'm hoping to get some advice on names to use in reference to an article that I would like to develop in Afrikaans. The English version of the article is w:en:Population Matters. Other versions include: w:ar:المسائل_السكانية and w:ru:Движение за оптимальную численность населения

I have a couple of problems with names.

There are advantages in translating the name - studies have shown that a major factor behind increase in population is a low standard of education and am supposing that less well educated people, from any language base, may be less likely to open articles with titles that aren't in their first language.

The first problem is that this English title has multiple meanings but I still hope to present something meaningful. The second problem is that the previous name of the organisation used a term that has charitable meanings in English which may be lost in translation.

I was hoping to say something along the lines of:
"Population Importance" (Eng.Population Matters; "which also translates as: Population Topics"), "and which was formerly known as the Optimum Population Trust (Eng. the Optimum Population Trust, OPT)...

In English people talk of an important thing by stating that "it matters" (google) and they can also refer to various topics as "subject matters" (google). I guess that the main translated title of of the organisation could refer to either definition of "matters".

In the UK people are familiar with the idea of the w:en:Charitable trust. A similar concept of the legal framework is used in many countries w:en:Trust law but I was unsure whether the meanings of translations of "Trust" would carry anything approaching the charitable meaning of the English "trust". I your views on whether this word should be translated or not would be appreciated.

I don't actually represent the organization but share similar interests. Your advice on names would be really appreciated as, in the first case, this is what would come up in listings.

WikiScienceCompetition 2017

Hi! Wiki Science Competition has started, sitenotices have appeared for sure in Spain, Austria, USA, Russian Federation and Ukraine, and Italy will be join very soon with a massive national campaign.

As a member of the academic committee I did my best to reduce the gap between countries both in the composition of the juries and now in the outreach. I did inform many platforms (enwiki, eswiki, frwiki) during the preparation of the event, now I am informing all national institutions, associations and federations of science and technology I can contact, especially those located in countries without national juries (so, also in South Africa) and I am posting notes on LinkedIn groups everyday... and so on. That's why I am here.

We started to prepare banners for many countries but on meta they say it is not wise to use them all, so if you want to use the style and do one here on your wiki for few days, just inform us.

User:บุญพฤทธิ์ ทวนทัย is a contributor based at the Thai Wikipedia who has created machine translations of articles and spamming them over a wide range of Wikipedia languages, including here. While the subjects of the articles he has created are (mostly) notable, the mistake of creating articles in languages he does not understand has led to extremely bad quality, probably at the level of illegibility. Unless local editors are willing to start a clean-up effort, I suggest that his contributions be deleted.
