Gebruik van beelde uit die Commons

wysig

Haai Mike,

As jy my kon eksplikeer hoe 'n mens dit maak sou ek baie dankvol wees. (If you could give me a link to an english language article on how to do it, that would be even better - my Afrikaans is limited. If you have time, please check my articles for necessary Afrikaans corrections. I consulted dutch, french and english wikipedia. Many of the templates that work in other languages, don't work on the afrikaans site. I hope in time it gets easier.)

No problem, you just need to make sure that you use the correct filename. For instance, I can link to the file at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Burg_Hohenzollern_ak.jpg, I only need to use [[Image:Burg_Hohenzollern_ak.jpg|thumb]] (I assume you're familiar with image syntax...). If all goes well, the picture should appear next to this paragraph:
I thought that what I tried to do was exactly what you describe above. I think that the reason it didn't show was probably because it was on another language's site but not in the Commons. That has to be the explanation. I can't think what else it could be. Mike Hayes 17:39, 18 Junie 2007 (UTC)Beantwoord
I'll have a look at your language use and correct it if I have the time. If not, I might add the cleanup template to it (if it does need particular attention), which will allow editors to reach it via the "articles for cleanup" category.
Indeed, you'll have to seperately copy and translate any template you wish to use here. If you're not familiar with the Afrikaans terminology, you might ask for a consultation in the Wikipedia:Geselshoekie. Good luck, and thank you for your contributions. Anrie 08:02, 18 Junie 2007 (UTC)Beantwoord
The template I was particularly concerned about was the French one in which one enters the geographic coordinates and it places a red dot on the map. I searched for something similar on the Afrikaans site and found the one I finally used but it does not have the latitude/longitude capabilities of the other template. If a similar template exists on the Afrikaans site, I could simply copy it and change the details which is what I have always done up to now when translating articles form other language wikis into English. If you know of an article in the Afrikaans wiki that has a similar template (latitude/longitude capabilities), could you give me a link to it. Thanks Anrie. Mike Hayes 17:12, 18 Junie 2007 (UTC)Beantwoord
I decided to change the map of Gard to the one of Nîmes[1] from French wiki but as I don't know how to use the latitude/longitude template in Afrikaans wiki, I did a screen capture and uploaded that. My programming abilities are very limited but if I could read up about how to do this, I could translate the appropriate program into Afrikaans. Again, if you know the link to this information in English wiki that would help a lot. Mike Hayes 17:27, 18 Junie 2007 (UTC)Beantwoord
Sorry for only getting back to you now - I don't really have links to any English information. I've heard about the mag-location-dot-thingie (I do believe that's the technical term) and will look into it and let you know if I find anything. After all, something like that can benefit many users here. Anrie 18:01, 19 Junie 2007 (UTC)Beantwoord

About a month later, but I managed to figure it out: Sjabloon:Ligging. Anrie 10:33, 12 Julie 2007 (UTC)Beantwoord

Versorging van Nîmes

wysig

I had a look at the article and was actually imressed by the lack of errors, compared to the articles that some other non-native speakers have produced. I would appreciate it if you had a look at the changes I made, so that you can keep them in mind in the future. They include

  • Months and days of the week are written with a capital letter in Afrikaans.
  • Keep the amount of categories to a minimum, our categories are still quite small, so we don't categorise so precisely quite yet. The article didn't cover the city's existence as a Roman city, so I removed it for now. It can be reinserted once the relevant information is added to the article.
  • Category names are in plural form, rather than singular.

Baie dankie vir die informasie Anrie but don't be too impressed with my Afrikaans. All I did was translate from the Nederlands. Of course Dutch has many differences from Afrikaans, in both vocabulary as well as grammar, and as I haven't lived in South Africa for thirty-seven years, I am excusably very rusty. Believe it or not, unlike you, I do have an Afrikaans-English dictionary but it is not a large one. I find that the best way to get around my linguistic limitations is to read other similar articles in Afrikaans wiki and use that as a guide to correct language usage. This works in other languages too, of course. I've actually had the nerve to make some additions to French wiki when I thought it needed something, using this "cheat" technique, but I keep that to a minimum. -- Mike Hayes 16:03, 18 Junie 2007 (UTC)Beantwoord

Spelerposisies in rugby‎

wysig

Hi, Mike

I see you just created this article and was wondering if you were planning to extend it and to what degree? The information is already present in the article Rugby (and could be extended within that article), so I'm a bit confused.

I wanted a link from the mention of a rugby position in another article [2] without making it neccesary for readers to have to search the whole Rugby article. What would be preferable is to have a link to a subsection of an article if that is possible. Is there a way of linking directly to the section Spelerposisies in the Rugby article? - Mike Hayes 18:55, 22 Junie 2007 (UTC)Beantwoord
Indeed. The correct link in this case would be [[Rugby#Spelerposisies]], which will show as Rugby#Spelerposisies. Would you agree that the new article is redundant now?
Of course. Delete it. - Mike Hayes 19:14, 22 Junie 2007 (UTC)Beantwoord
I'm assuming you know how to "hide" a link and to make it say what you want to? Anrie 19:16, 22 Junie 2007 (UTC)Beantwoord
Yes I do but thank you for not making any assumptions. Hate when people do that. - Mike Hayes 19:19, 22 Junie 2007 (UTC)Beantwoord

By the way - I've been looking at that French template-location thingy (re: Nîmes) and I'm quite flummoxed: I'm learning all this template stuff as I'm going along and not quite sure yet how to make it work here. Will let you know as soon as I learn something (although you probably shouldn't hold your breath).

Also, I've been contacting you in English, since I figured that'd be the best way to avoid misunderstandings. If you'd prefer Afrikaans, you just need to say so. Anrie 18:41, 22 Junie 2007 (UTC)Beantwoord

English is my first language. I haven't been exposed to Afrikaans on a regular basis for the past thirty-seven years, so I struggle with reading and comprehension right now. However, in the few weeks that I've been reading Afrikaans Wikipedia, I have improved considerably as imbedded information starts to click in. If trying to communicate with me then, it it better that it be in English for now. Dankie vir al jou werk. - Mike Hayes 19:09, 22 Junie 2007 (UTC)Beantwoord
Thank you for transferring the image I was trying to edit from English Wikipedia.[3] I had intended to get back to it later. I had anticipated that you might fix it and that I would be able to use that as a guide in the future. - Mike Hayes 19:09, 22 Junie 2007 (UTC)Beantwoord
No problem. Let me know if there is anything else you need help with. I like helping people do things right from the start, that way you don't create a backlog of things that need to be fixed. Anrie 19:16, 22 Junie 2007 (UTC)Beantwoord
