Johnson was opgevoed by die onafhanklike Jesuïete-skool Stonyhurst Kollege, en by Magdalen Kollege, Oxford. Hy het die eerste keer in die 1950's bekendheid verwerf as 'n joernalis wat geskryf het vir, en later die redakteur was van, New Statesman tydskrif.
