The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King het ’n rekord opgestel deur vir al 11 sy benoemings Oscars te wen, insluitende beste prent en regisseur.[1] Die Suid-Afrikaans gebore aktrise Charlize Theron het die Oscar vir beste aktrise ingepalm.

Ná die omstrede vertoning tydens die Super Bowl XXXVIII toe Justin Timberlake ’n stuk van Janet Jackson se uitrusting afgetrek en haar bors ontbloot het, het die uitsaaikorporasie ABC besluit om ’n vertraging van vyf sekondes in die uitsending in te werk om ’n soortgelyke voorval te voorkom.[2] Die president van AMPAS, Frank Pierson, het beswaar aangeteken – volgens hom was dit nie ’n regeringsensuur nie, maar "’n netwerkverteenwoordiger wat in effek raai wat ’n regering sal toelaat, en dit kan selfs erger wees".[3] Hierop het die vervaardiger van die seremonie, Joe Roth, geantwoord dat net vloekwoorde uitgesny sou word en nie dele van politieke toesprake nie.[4]

Die seremonie het gemengde reaksie onder resensente uitgelok. Baie het dit beskou as flou en oninteressant en die vertraging in die uitsending is ook gekritiseer.[5][6][7] Ander publikasies was positiewer en het veral Crystal se aanbieding geprys.[8][9]
