Metuchen (/məˈtʌən/ is 'n voorstedelike Borough wat in Middlesex County, New Jersey, Verenigde State geleë is. Dit is geleë 5 myl (8 kilometer) noordoos van New Brunswick, 19 myl (31 kilometer) suidwes van Newark, 26 myl (42 kilometer) suidwes van Jersey City, en 33 myl (53 kilometer) suidwes van Manhattan, wat alles deel vorm van die New York metropolitaanse area. Metuchen is geïnkorporeer as 'n borough (kragtens 'n wet van die New Jersey-wetgewer op 20 Maart 1900) uit gedeeltes van Raritan Township (nou bekend as Edison).[12]

Die vroegste inwoners van die gebied was groepe van die inheemse Lenape mense wat in die omgewing gewoon het. In 1646 was opperhoof Matouchin deel van 'n groep wat 1200 krygers ingesluit het. [13]

Tot 1870 was die huidige Metuchen deel van Woodbridge Township. Omdat die setlaars in die westelike deel van die nedersetting so ver verwyderd was van die hoof-nedersetting van Woodbridge het hulle vroeg reeds 'n aparte identiteit ontwikkel. Die naam "Metuchen" het die eerste keer in 1688/1689 verskyn. Die naam is afgelei van die naam van 'n inheemse Amerikaanse opperhoof, bekend as Matouchin of Matochshegan. [14] [15][16] In 1701 is 'n toesighouer van paaie aangestel vir "Metuchen distrik". In 1705 is Main Street gelyklopend aangelê saam met die pad van Metuchen na Woodbridge.

Tussen 1717 en 1730 is 'n huis gebou vir vergaderings op weeksdae wat deur die predikant van die Woodbridge Presbiteriaanse Kerk gehou is. In 1756 het die Metuchen Presbiteriane daarin om hul eie gemeente te stig, wat getuig het van hul groeiende getal. In 1770 het die gemeentes saamgesmelt, met Metuchen wat 2/5 van die predikant se dienste ontvang het en Woodbridge wat 3/5 ontvang het; Teen 1772 het Metuchen genoegsaam gegroei om die helfte van sy tyd te regverdig. In 1793 het die twee kerke weer geskei.

Van die laat 18de tot die vroeë 19de eeu het Metuchen min gegroei. 'n Kaart van 1799 toon tien geboue in die middedorp langs Mainstreet. Teen 1834 kon 'n presbiteriaanse kerk, 'n winkel, twee tavernes en ongeveer 'n dosyn wonings gevind word. Dit wou voorkom asof die opening van die Middlesex en Essex Turnpike in 1806, en die Perth Amboy en Bound Brook Turnpike in 1808, groei nie in 'n noemenswaardige mate aangespoor het nie. Die tweede helfte van die 19de eeu was 'n tydperk van maatskaplike, kulturele en godsdienstige diversifikasie in Metuchen. Tussen 1859 en 1866 is die Gereformeerde Kerk georganiseer, die eerste Katolieke mis gehou, en die St. Luke's Episcopal Church gestig. In 1870 is beide die Building and Loan Association en die biblioteek geopen, dieselfde jaar dat Raritan Township geïnkorporeer is. As die grootste dorp in die nuwe township, het Metuchen natuurlik die kommersiële en kulturele sentrum daarvan geword en aansienlike politieke beheer begin verkry.

In 1879 is die letterkundige- en debatsvereniging gestig en in 1883 die Village Improvement Society. Teen 1882 het Metuchen School 256 ingeskrewe leerlinge gehad en teen 1885 het die New Jersey Gazette 37 ondernemings gelys.

Die dekade van die 1890's was 'n tydperk van uitbreiding vir openbare dienste. In 1894 is 'n telegraafdiens begin en in 1897 is 'n telefoondiens begin deur die N.Y. and N.J Telephone Company. In dieselfde jaar het die Midland Water Company in werking getree en brandkrane begin voorsien vir "nuutgestigte" vrywilliger brandweerdienste. In 1899 is 'n nuwe straatbeligtingstelsel geïnstalleer. Omstreeks dieselfde tyd is 'n fietsry organisasie gestig, by name die Metuchen Wheelmen, wat hom beywer het vir verbeterde paaie. Verder het die handel in so 'n mate gegroei dat die New Brunswick Directory in 1899 91 ondernemings gelys het.

Metuchen het gedurende hierdie tyd 'n toeloop van kunstenaars, letterkundige figure en bekende intellektuele gehad, en sodoende die bynaam "the Brainy Boro" gekry. [18] Een van die twee poskantore van die stad word Brainy Boro Station genoem.

Die nuwe eeu het begin met die inkorporasie van die borough, in 1900. [12]

Op 19 November 1981 het Metuchen die setel van die pasgestigte Rooms-Katolieke bisdom van Metuchen geword. Die bisdom behels, met meer as 500 000 katolieke, Hunterdon County, Middlesex County, Somerset County en Warren County . [19]
